Yurdanur Ünal

Professor of Meteorological Engineering, İstanbul Technical University

Prof. Yurdanur Ünal is a Professor in the Department of Meteorological Engineering at the İstanbul Technical University (ITU) where she has a faculty member since 1995. Dr. Ünal holds a BS degree from Istanbul Technical University, Meteorological Engineering. She obtained her MSc and Ph.D. at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the area of Atmospheric Sciences. Her PhD work, focused on the global sea level variability. She worked as a visiting scholar in UCLA, Atmospheric Science Department, UC San Diego, Experimental Climate Prediction Center for summer periods of 1996 and 1998, respectively, and Chicago University, Department of Geophysical Sciences for the academic year of 2001-2002. Dr. Unal completed the Train the Trainer Education Program coordinated as a bi-national project of “A Cooperative Hazard Impact-reduction Effort Via Education” between ITU, Turkey and Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States and holds a certificate on Exercise Design. Her research interests lie in the area of climate change and variability, ranging from urban to regional scales, and regional climate modeling, especially downscaling Global Climate Model simulations over Turkey for today’s conditions and for future under different emission scenarios. She completed several national and international projects and guided several undergraduate and graduate students.
