Barbara Oomen

Project Leader, Cities of Refuge

Prof. Barbara Oomen holds a chair in the sociology of human rights at Utrecht University, and works at University College Roosevelt, UU’s Liberal Arts and Sciences College in Middelburg, the Netherlands. She is the project leader of Cities of Refuge, a large research project into the relevance of human rights (as law, discourse and praxis) to how local authorities in Europe welcome and integrate refugees. She has published extensively on local authorities and human rights and co-edited ‘Global Urban Justice: the rise of human rights cities’. In addition, she sits on the advisory board of the Human Rights Cities network and other relevant advisory bodies and editorial boards. In 2016 – 2017, prof. Oomen was a Fernand Braudel Scholar at the European University Institute in Florence.
